    Meet Matthew – though currently living in L.A, ask any Toronto Instructor (and most regulars) that he’s known around the studio as a regular RIDE OR DIE. Matthew’s energy and love of the RIDE community is infectious – his personality and passion for life are felt on and off the bike. We’re so grateful to have him as part of the Ossington family. Can’t wait to have you back, Matthew!

    What do you do for your 9-5?

    I am a Celebrity hairstylist living in LA.

    If your bestie were to describe you in three words, what would they be?

    Loyal, driven, and a child.

    How long have you been coming to RIDE?

    Since March 2019.

    What motivates you to get your ass to class?

    It gives me the most insane HIGH all day and shakes out anything bottled up inside me.

    How has RIDE impacted your life?

    I was a pack and a half a day smoker, I have now lost 35 pounds and am in the best shape of my life. It has shifted my entire mindset and shaped me more than I could ever have imagined it doing. I have been highly goal oriented but always focused on my career, with little to no time off. It has made me reevaluate balance/health, and cleared my mind to open up a path I had not seen before.

    Outside of your “9-5” – tell us about all the badass things you’re up to?

    9-5 has never been a thing for me I am more like 24/7 and mostly have no control over my schedule unfortunately. I am working on launching a brand, and have recently created, produced and hosted a documentary pilot, and well that’s all I can say for now 😉

    In your opinion, what makes RIDE’s community so unique?

    This is a hard one, as there are so many reasons and some I can’t even put into words. I did my first spin class in February of this year and since then have spun in 6 countries at over 20 studios…I can say with 100% conviction nothing compares, not even close to what RIDE does for the mind and body. It’s a space with such athletically driven people, and not just physically – I see this other sense of success from everyone that’s around. It is so accepting and welcoming of new people and at the same time constantly drives and pushes those who RIDE regularly. Let’s also put it this way…when I visit Toronto, I hardly see my friends because every spare minute is spent on a bike at RIDE, with new amazing people.

    Favourite Instructor and why?

    Well first of all, I think I have taken most instructors and I have yet nor do I ever think I could have a bad class at RIDE. Each and every Instructor is unique. I am gonna take the easy road and obvious one…if that magical unicorn name “ASHLEY” appears on the upcoming schedule I am doing whatever it takes to make it.

    Best RIDE memory?

    One day I did 3 RIDES before 1PM all front row…I remember my first RIDE not being able to stay up for more than 30 seconds only 8 months ago, and I did 150 minutes of it ❤️❤️❤️.

    What other workouts do you do outside of RIDE?

    I have just started to do yoga once a week, to help my body stretch out, but I also do a heavy stretch on my own for 15 min a day. I also try to do Barry’s Bootcamp once a week. But the bike is my first love and I try to never miss a day.

    Song you’ve got on repeat?

    The new Bon Iver album ii, and the song Faith.

    If you were to give a s/o to a local entrepreneur, who would it be?

    One of my best buds and old assistant David Nadicci is an amazing hairstylist and just opened the most beautiful private salon near Trinity Bellwood’s called “we are, we are” 890 Queen West. His Instagram is @nadicci, check him out. And also if you go I have been telling him to come to RIDE and he is nervous so drag him 😉

    Describe your ideal Saturday.

    A double class in the AM, smoothie and coffee after, then hit a farmers market, and bbq in my backyard with friends by the pool, relaxing the “California” way 😉

    Who motivates you?

    My friends, I am very blessed to have such successful and highly motivated friends, just hanging out with them inspires me and pushes me.

    Fave quote or words to live by?

    “You must be prepared to sacrifice who you are, to become who you are destined to be”.

    Last book you read was….

    “Essentialism” other than spin it’s the one other thing that impacted me so greatly this year, teaches you to find balance while being more productive than ever.

    What does RIDE mean to you?

    It opens up your soul so you can see deep inside yourself and remove all the shit that is polluting you and fill it with such positive energy. If you go to RIDE and you get this question, we all know we could speak on this for 6 hours straight minimum and annoy everyone around us that won’t get it.     This month marks another big milestone for RIDE CYCLE CLUB –celebrating 5 incredible years of sweat, community and growth. To celebrate, we connected with Ashley Ander, Co-Founder + Head of Brand here at RIDE. Read on as Ashley reflects on the community, what we’ve built, and what’s to come.

    After 5 years of building community, what is it that sets RIDE apart from the rest?

    In simple terms, it’s the people. The difference between RIDE and any other studio is the fact that these people – from staff to riders to instructors, all have something in common. It’s so difficult to describe what this is – maybe because it’s not actually a thing. It’s a feeling. It’s an energy. It’s a passion that is created when you offer the sensation that adrenaline junkies crave but in a controlled environment. RIDE is an experience that kind of shocks you at first but once you’re done, you turn to a complete stranger beside you, high-five and say “let’s fucking do that again!” You really need to do it, in order to understand it…. maybe it’s something in the air….or water….who knows 😉

    How has the community strengthened over these last few years, adding more studios, expanding to new cities or neighbourhoods…what’s the glue that holds it together?

    The glue comes from the experience and it all starts with one person. That person passes the energy from the experience onto another person and they then pass it onto to another and the cycle continues. It’s really just a giant game of good energy hot potato!

    Can you name a few standout memories from the past 5 years that really highlight why RIDE is so special?

    1. SEAWHEEZE in 2016 where we built a 20 ft long x 6 foot high stage in under 45 min (highly stressful at the time…but it paid off and looked INCREDIBLE)
    2. RIDE’s 1st UNDRGRND in Gastown where we built up our first team of instructors. They trained under there for 3 months!
    3.The Faith Chorale Gospel Choir at Yonge and Dundas square for NXNE. Dream come true.
    4. Last but not least The Spice Girls RIDE at Ossington. I have never laughed so hard in my entire life.

    There have been many amazing memories it’s hard to pick just a few.

    As a business owner/brand manager/trainer, what are some key things you’ve learned along the way?

    1. Do not settle for anything less than outstanding.
    2. The people matter.
    3. Keep things simple. Keep it straight forward and be honest.
    4. Be prepared to learn something new everyday.
    5. Fear complacency!

    Is this just the beginning? Any hints as to what we can expect for the next 5 years?

    There’s still lots more to come. Keep your eyes open for RIDE UNDRGRND popping up in new markets.

    Any parting words to our community members?

    Thank you from the bottom of my heart if you’ve ever been to RIDE or are a part of the RIDE COMMUNITY. I promise one day we’ll figure out the microphones 😉 To each and every rider, manager, instructor, front desk, ride support – I love you all, RIDE wouldn’t be what it is without each and every one of you.

    Meet Calida – a Toronto Instructor who began her teaching journey with the West Coast RIDE family. A professional dancer, Calida brings incredible rhythm and musicality to her classes, not to mention an unreal repertoire of hip hop. Get to know Calida!

    Where did you grow up?

    I grew up in a small town in central BC called Quesnel (about 8 hours from Vancouver).

    Can you remember your first RIDE class?

    My first class was with Ash in Vancouver, which I think was a low key audition to teach…

    How long did it take until you realized you wanted to become an Instructor?

    I have a crazy universe story for this one, gotta give you a little back story tho. I had been injured for almost a year and had moved back to Vancouver from LA. I wasn’t dancing or exercising, I was absolutely losing my mind! When the idea to move to Toronto came about, I started day-dreaming about working with RIDE- volunteering, whatever, I just wanted to be involved. It was a Tuesday morning, I checked the RIDE job postings on the website before heading to physio.. At my physio sesh, I got the green light to start dancing again! I went downstairs after and sat at Wholefoods. Little did I know Ash was sitting at a table across from me and recognized me from teaching dance. When I left, I had messages from a couple Vancouver RIDE instructors asking if I would wanna teach and to take Ash’s class the next day. IT WAS CRAZY. The universe hooked me up hard. I took class and started training that weekend!!

    How would you describe your teaching style?

    You remember elementary school dances? You’d dance so hard, hit the sides for an apple juice and then your fav track from Big Shiny Tunes comes on and you had to run to bust it again. That’s what I strive for. I want it to be hard, I want you to sweat, have a moment of “oh my god I can’t do this” and then crush it!

    Best part of being an Instructor is…

    Connecting with the community. I feel so lucky to be a part of the RIDE fam.

    How has becoming a RIDE Instructor changed you?

    It’s definitely made me appreciate more genres of music. I was a bit of a hip hop snob before, and now I’m bopping to Drezo! On a more real note, when I first started at RIDE I was in a dark place. Being injured was hard on my body but it really messed with my mind. RIDE pulled me out. I was able to move my body again, to blasting music and connect with people! It seriously saved me.

    Go-to quote or words to live by?

    Feel the fear and do it anyways. Or you’re not failing you’re learning.

    Who motivates you?

    My bf Terry. He took on this huge new job in a new city without knowing what the heck was gonna happen, and he just went for it. He feels the fear and goes for it everyday. He also always reminds me to have fun and enjoy!

    Favourite book?

    The Nightingale by Kristin Hannah.

    What’s your #1 life hack?

    Eat your candy one piece at a time so it lasts longer. And, when you think to yourself “should I go pee before we go?” go pee. Cause you probably have to go pee and will regret it later.

    Where can we find you on a Saturday afternoon in the city?

    If it’s sunny out, I am 100% catching rays. I’m still learning the city tho, so please send me recos for your fav restaurants/things to do!

    Any hidden or not so hidden talents?

    I’m really good at whistling.

    If you could brunch with any person (past or present), who would it be and why?

    My nieces, I miss them. They’re the best and say the weirdest things. I could totally go for a tea party with them now!

    Best memory since you joined RIDE?

    My Community RIDES for sure. That was the moment it sunk in that this was real! Also, making the move to TO was scary but I instantly felt like I had a group of friends. Everyone at RIDE was so welcoming and made me feel part of the fam right away. Thanks you guys <3

    #1 piece of advice for someone looking to have a killer RIDE?

    Do you. Don’t worry about what the person beside you is doing, listen to your body and honour that.

    What has you stoked on life right now?

    I’ve started teaching adult beginner hip hop classes Saturdays at RYU. I lovvvvee these classes.

    What does RIDE mean to you?

    RIDE to me is a safe space to be yourself completely. I feel so supported when Im riding. Everyone is on their own journey and not worrying about what anyone else is doing, but you know they have your back completely.

    Meet James – a Vancouver Instructor who owns themed RIDES and curates playlists that make you want to dance (and let’s be honest, sing). Always blending fun and intensity, James’ class offer 50 minutes of freedom to be your truest self – honouring whatever you’re feeling that day.

    Where did you grow up?

    I grew up in Cranbrook, BC – small town boy.

    Can you remember your first RIDE class?

    Yes, I remember we did a team sweat at lululemon and we did a class with Julie Chutter. I specifically remember how mesmerizing Julie’s voice was (if you’re reading this then I’m sure you know) and how powerful she was up on the bike. I had been teaching at a previous studio and I remember taking her class and leaving feeling super inspired to switch up my own teaching style. I went back the next day.

    How long did it take until you realized you wanted to become an Instructor?

    I had been spinning for about a year before realizing it was time to get up there myself. I had loved the workout so much so naturally I thought it’d be easy to get up there (and later learned it’s completely different). I toyed with the idea for a couple of months until there were open auditions and I decided to go for it. It’s one of the best decisions I’ve ever made.

    Describe your teaching style.

    You know when you go to a concert and there’s that half hour before the artist takes the stage and you feel the anticipation, the energy from everyone in the room and then suddenly the lights drop and the music starts? This is what I want my class to feel like. I want to provide an experience where it feels like you’re at your favourite concert or show. Every detail from the music that plays before class to carefully selecting how each song transitions from one to the next. There’s no better feeling than losing yourself in the music at a concert, and this is the type of experience I want to give my Riders. It’s 50 minutes where you get to let go of your day, to get out of your head and to have some fucking fun. That’s my ultimate goal as an Instructor.

    Best part of being an Instructor is…

    Without a doubt the best part about being an Instructor is seeing how you can really change someone’s life. That sounds cheesy and like bullshit right? But it’s the honest truth. To be a part of that magic, that change for them, is very rewarding. If I can have just one Rider come up to me each week and tell me that their day just got a little better from taking my class, then that makes it all worth it. I wouldn’t be anything without my Riders and fellow Instructors, they’ve taught me so much and have inspired me to become a better Instructor every time I step onto that podium.

    Tempo by Lizzo – oh man. She’s everything to me right now.

    AM or PM RIDES?

    AM for sure – although they are such a struggle for me to get out of bed for, I always know I’ll feel so much better for my day if I just get on that bike.

    Favourite way to sweat outside of RIDE?

    Running for sure – whenever I’m feeling slightly anxious, or in a bad mood, I know that a run will fix it immediately.

    How has becoming a RIDE Instructor changed you?

    Becoming a RIDE Instructor has changed me in the sense that it’s made me realize who I am when I’m at my best. The feeling I have when I’m on the bike, the feeling I have when I leave the studio – that’s who I want to be in every minute of my life. It’s when I love myself the most. To me that’s such an invaluable lesson and I’m grateful for it every day.

    Never a failure. Always a lesson.

    Who motivates you?

    This fitness community. I’ve worked as an Instructor in various studios for almost 3 years now and to see all of the different types of people that walk in week in and week out who are there to better themselves – that’s what pushes me – to be better for them.

    ‘Never Use Futura’ – if you ever want to geek out on fonts, you know where to find me.

    What’s your #1 life hack?

    Paying your bills as soon as you get them.

    Where can we find you on a Saturday afternoon in the city?

    If it’s sunny, the beach. If it’s rainy, most likely a brewery.

    Any hidden or not so hidden talents?

    I can retrieve the top shelf cereal from any store.

    If you could brunch with any person (past or present), who would it be and why?

    I want to get day drunk with Rihanna so bad. If you know me, you know she’s my number 1 and to have her apply some Fenty Highlight to my cheek bones during brunch would be the ultimate.

    Best memory since you joined RIDE?

    This past May, I taught a Rihanna themed class – which if you read my previous answer then you can imagine how excited I was for this theme. The energy in the room that night was unlike any class I had ever taught or even taken. Everyone was singing during their favourite songs, and it truly felt like we could have been at a Rihanna concert. I left with a full heart, and in that moment I remember thinking “You love this. You’re great at this. Keep going”.

    #1 piece of advice for someone looking to have a killer RIDE?

    Go in with zero expectations. Be prepared to let go of everything you thought spin was. Be prepared to learn something new not only about your body but also your mind. Once you’re out of your head, you let the music and the energy be your guide and before you know it, it’s over and you’ll want to jump right back in that room. Oh – and scream if you want to! I know it can feel weird at first but it feels so good to let it out.

    What has you stoked on life right now?

    I know this whole thing has been about my experience at RIDE – but right now RIDE is what has me stoked on life! I finally feel like I’m getting to a great spot with my classes and feeling so comfortable up there. I’m stoked to have this opportunity to teach every single week and will be forever grateful for this experience, even if it ended tomorrow.

    Meet Emily – an Ossington Instructor who defines what it means to honour your uniqueness, both on and off the bike. Emily’s classes are just that – unique. She makes every Rider, new and old, feel welcome and a part of the pack. She challenges you and pushes you to your limits while keeping things fun, vibrant and dance-y. Emily’s classes fly by in the best way – fuelled by unique playlists, chill yet fiery vibes, and a whole lot of towels up.

    Where did you grow up?

    I was born in the Beaches and grew up in the suburbs. I lived in Thornhill, Ontario until I moved to Montreal for university.

    Can you remember your first RIDE class?

    Yes! It was three years ago in Vancouver and it was all thanks to Sarah Kriesman’s recommendation.

    I sat on a bike in the third row off to the side. I just remember class starting a million miles an hour and watching in confusion as everyone around me hit each beat with grit and grace. Meanwhile, I was just wobbling around. One thing’s for sure – that was the first time I had tried a workout that was so focused on music, and it was my favourite part. Little did I know how quickly things would escalate once I got back to Toronto and the UNDRGRND opened…

    For anyone new to RIDE, remember that everyone starts out the same way, and everyone can improve the same way.

    How long did it take until you realized you wanted to become an Instructor?

    A while…I’d say over a year. Only when I built up the strength and confidence to really be myself in that room (which includes dancing and cheering) did I realize that I wanted to teach. It also took time for me to build up confidence in my style of music. I play a lot of Dancehall, Afrobeats and Reggaeton in my classes, plus a ton of other music from Latin America…slightly different than what was played in most classes when I started training. Trying that music in the RIDE studio was a bit nerve-wracking at first…but I’m so glad I did!

    Shoutout to Rebecca in Toronto and Joc in Vancouver for becoming my music spirit animals this year.

    How would you describe your teaching style?

    I’m trying to create the workout-version of your favourite basement dance party; the one that’s packed with people and the music slaps and everyone’s in a good mood, dancing right up against each other. You’re smiling and sweating and before you know it, it’s 4am and the night flew by. You leave exhausted and excited and hug new friends on your way out the door. That’s what I hope you feel in my class.

    I would say my teaching style is hype, positive, challenging and inclusive. I’m excited to be in there with you, and I want you to know that…but we’re all going to work hard together.

    Best part of being an Instructor is…

    Finding out how your classes impact others. When someone takes the time to tell you that your classes helped them get through a breakup, or that they recommended it to their best friend, or that they look forward to riding with you every week…that kind of stuff stays with you for a long time. When you play a song that you know is going to make someone’s day and you catch that look in their eyes the second it comes on the speaker, that’s a shot of pure joy right into your veins.

    AM or PM RIDES?

    PM. Taking a RIDE class after work completely resets your day. It was the routine that made me fall in love with RIDE in the first place. That’s what I hope my Thursday 6pm class is for others.

    PM also counts for mid-day RIDES. My Wednesday noon class has become one of my favourite times of the week. If you haven’t made it to RIDE for a mid-day class, switch up your schedule for a week and give it a go.

    Favourite way to sweat outside of RIDE?

    Exploring a new city on foot the whole day long. That, or dancing.

    How has becoming a RIDE Instructor changed you?

    Becoming a RIDE Instructor has helped me step into the best version of myself. Both inside and outside of the studio, I am healthier, more confident, stronger, and prouder of the things that make me unique. Ultimately, RIDE has made me happier and more comfortable in my own skin. Getting emotional over here…next question!

    Who motivates you?

    That handsome man who rides in the front row and works in real estate. Micah Polowin. Ultimate partner in crime, #1 cheerleader, 9 years running. There is no one who motivates me more than he does.

    RAP ABCs. It’s for little kids, but is also how we all should have learned the alphabet growing up. M is for Missy Elliott, T is for Tupac Shakur.

    What’s your #1 life hack?

    Don’t check bags when you fly. Carry-on only.

    Where can we find you on a Saturday afternoon in the city?

    Probably outdoors in a park downtown, or on my way to steal your pool. Toronto is an amazing city to live in and there are so many options no matter what you’re into (especially during the summertime), which means I usually pack too much into my Saturday afternoon, but it’s really fun to bounce around from spot to spot with your friends all day in this city.

    Any hidden or not so hidden talents?

    Larger-than-life charcuterie spreads and flower projects, usually for events. The largest one I was brought on to build was twelve feet long and three feet wide. It’s fun to be creative with each design, and I spend a lot of time ensuring that all of the ingredients taste good together.

    I also started a capsule collection jewelry brand called spoken thread and hand-assemble tassel earrings here in Toronto. I still buy yarn from the same market in Peru that inspired the whole project a few years ago.

    If you could brunch with any person (past or present), who would it be and why?

    My Dad, because we lost him almost three years ago and I miss him terribly. RIDE would have blown him away. I wish I could have brought him to the studio and introduced him to everyone; I think they’d see where I get my sense of humour from.

    I also think my Dad would have made his way to the front row in a RIDE class; he was a great cyclist and his last charity ride was 500km across a desert in Israel. He was raising money for a seeing-eye-dog foundation.

    Best memory since you joined RIDE?

    At least let me choose two!

    1) a class in late August 2018, the first time I felt really strong teaching after training all summer. I think I met my RIDE alter-ego that day (she still needs a name, taking suggestions). I’m not sure how else to describe it besides I felt totally free and I saw everyone start to trust me.

    The second would be my first Dancehall class with Rebecca. Everyone in that room, including myself, was just going bananas.

    #1 piece of advice for someone looking to have a killer RIDE?

    You’re in the driver’s seat. Any class is as easy or as challenging as you want it to be, and it’s pretty powerful to know that you have that control over your workout. If you lose focus and start to coast, recognize it, take a deep breath, crank that tension, and get after it.

    What has you stoked on life right now?

    I’m getting married this September!

    What does RIDE mean to you?

    Release. Growth. Endorphins. Friendship. Purpose. Happiness.

    RIDE is the most positive and meaningful community I’ve ever been a part of. There’s a weird stigma around fitness cults and the idea of friendships that revolve around one singular thing; to me, RIDE proves the complete opposite. These people might work out together, but they’re also an interconnected web of real friends. They go to concerts together and on vacation together, support each other’s businesses, babysit each other’s kids (and pets), refer each other for jobs and help each other through times of loss. They adore and uplift one another, and are still always welcoming to new faces. I’m biased, but I don’t care – this is one of the best crews in the world.

    Meet Dylan – a goal-crushing Toronto Rider who brings positivity, humour, and an all around great vibe to our Toronto RIDE community – even at 6AM. His energy, charisma and howling is infectious, and as you’ll read below, he’s become an integral part of our amazing group of die hard Riders.

    How long have you been coming to RIDE?

    A year and a half – but I have only been fully addicted for a year or so.

    What motivates you to get your ass to class?

    Best way to start the day with a clear head. Hands down. Plus if I don’t get my ass to class I get the ever so famous “late-cancellation” email which is enforced by the lovely humans behind the front desk.

    How has RIDE impacted your life?

    Increased focus and positivity. Physically I’m in the best shape of my life (or so I tell myself). A new inspiring group of friends that all grind together before facing whatever challenges the day holds for us individually. Not to mention a sick new bangers playlist on Spotify.

    Outside of your 9-5 – tell us about all the badass things you’re up to

    I recently became a licensed engineer and ran my first marathon (much credit goes to the homies who helped me study/train and support of friends and fam). If you’re looking for a massive endorphin rush and two days in bed without being able to move I would definitely suggest a marathon.

    I also just got home from a 2 week vacation in Italy and Greece with my Fiancée. Funny enough we ran into Emily in Mykonos and had a great day/night involving free shots, blood, and people throwing dinner plates. You guessed it, all three are related 😉 Maybe not in that order. But full disclaimer: smashing plates in Greek restaurants is a common thing and collateral damage is inevitable.

    But the biggest most badass thing is I get to marry my best friend next July. Love you Snipes.

    In your opinion, what makes RIDE’s community so unique?

    Somehow you go from walking nervously down this candle lit alleyway for the first time leading to a dark room (which also has candles) having no idea how to size your bike but somehow someone knows that you have no idea so they come and help you (but you still have no idea what is going on) – to – why would I sit down when the beats still bangin’ and everyone is swinging their towels Why don’t I just dump water over my head and keep going?

    The community carries you through those first classes; inspires you to work up to the front row; and continues to push you even when you think you’ve hit your peak. It’s the most supportive community that I’m super f*cking proud to be a part of.

    Favourite Instructor and why?

    Best RIDE memory?

    *Sips wine, staring at the city skyline, thinking of all the good times had at RIDE*

    Well… it would have to be the RIDE vs. Bond challenge last January. It was my first time riding and consistently running with Bond. It was the inception of my life as a runner and rider; two things I can’t live without today.

    There was also this ONE time last May 24 the RIDE fam hung out at Bellwoods Brewery (I believe for Meg’s birthday) and I may have chirped Alex about the ease of her arms routine that day. She threw me up on the podium next day for a vigorous arm routine and let me finish the class up there. Pretty sure the last song was Here Comes the Sun – Tom Staar Remix (absolute slapper) and was a very humbling experience.

    What other workouts do you do outside of RIDE?

    Running. Barry’s Bootcamp is a killer workout. The odd Karma Flow class at Pure Yoga as well.

    Song you’ve got on repeat?

    Found You – Kasbo (theme song of our recent Euro trip)

    If you could brunch with any person (past or present), who would it be?

    My Grandpa –I was too young when he passed to know or understand how great of a person he was and would love to just “shoot the shit”. Other than that I would say Elon Musk, but I’ll just live vicariously through Joe Rogen’s podcast for that one.

    If you were to give a s/o to a local entrepreneur, who would it be?

    Extra Burger. It was started about a year ago by a family friend. They offer the Beyond Meat burger for the veg heads, regular burgers for the meat heads (lol – sorry, had to).

    Describe your ideal Saturday in the city.

    Usually followed by my ideal Friday night, I would wake up and go to RIDE. Afterwards probably hit a park (Bellwoods) with some friends for some fun/sun followed by good eats. Then getting ready for whatever Saturday night may bring. Maybe a TFC or Jays game – but there are always beers and sometimes Twisted Teas involved.

    Who motivates you?

    Piper, my RIDE OR DIE.
    My brother, Jason. He is going to the 70.3 triathlon world champs this year in France. 6 or 7 years ago he wasn’t running, biking, or swimming. Love you bro – you’re going to crush it.
    My parents – definition of unconditional love and support right there.

    Fave quote or words to live by?

    Meet AJ – a Vancouver OG Rider whose experience with RIDE runs so deep, epitomizing what our community is all about – family. Read on and get to know this incredible Rider and her story.

    How long have you been coming to RIDE?

    Not long after they opened so almost 4 years ago.

    How has RIDE impacted your life?

    RIDE is the place that I get to go to for me. When those doors close, I am not a mom, a daughter, or a co worker, I am just AJ. In all honestly it’s not even about the workout anymore. It is a release for me. If I am stressed or tense or need to let shit go, I go to RIDE. If I want to sing my heart out like I am at karaoke or dance on the bike and release energy I go to RIDE. If I need a good cry it usually happens after weights when it is dark and I look forward to that song because I know it’s coming. It gives me my sanity on days when I feel like I’m losing it. Bottom line RIDE always has my back and in 50 minutes it gets my mind clear and I leave feeling like the boss that I need to be.

    Outside of your 9-5 – tell us about all the badass things you’re up to.

    I am a full time single mom to a 9 year old so I get to wear that cape everyday which trust me you have to be badass to wear it.

    In your opinion, what makes RIDE’s community so unique?

    It is so hard to put into words so I will give you an example. Last year I lost someone tragically and unexpectedly and my life changed overnight. Within two days I think I heard from every staff member and received the most beautiful bouquet of flowers from the entire RIDE staff. The card said “Thinking of you love your RIDE Family”. I will never forget that and the support they have given me inside and outside of class. I have heard people say that RIDE can be intimidating. Come with me, RIDE beside me and I will show you that RIDE means family.

    Favourite Instructor and why?

    That is like asking who is your favourite child. Impossible.

    Best RIDE memory?

    The live drumming RIDE. It was 75 minutes and I have never experienced anything like it.

    What other workouts do you do outside of RIDE?

    I don’t, I just RIDE. I make adjustments like lowering my handle bars, or changing my weights up, or focusing on my core or tension, things like that which gives me all I need.

    If you were to give a s/o to a local entrepreneur, who would it be?

    My girl Ariel Swan. I have known her for 15 years and she is the definition of a Boss. Her list is long and I could fill up this whole page but most people know her for SJS and Feed the People but her latest opening in a couple of weeks is Jaybird Studio here in Vancouver.     A double spin, brunch with bubbles and my besties and throwing the football in the park with my son.

    My son Kingston.

    What does RIDE mean to you?

    Balance. The cards that I have been dealt in this life that have lead me to be who I am today. I have strength that I never knew I was capable of but in order to maintain that you need balance. RIDE gives me the space to maintain that inner strength by allowing me to be just me for 50 minutes in a day. Some days it takes two classes and a couple days this past year it took three classes but RIDE always gets me there. I have tears in that room, and I have left everything I have on that floor and other days it’s all smiles and singing to every song. But RIDE is always there to remind me I can do it. It matches the strength I have on the inside by also showing me physically that I have it on the outside as well. RIDE gives me my balance.

    Meet Molly – a Vancouver Instructor who this past Fall transitioned from die-hard front-row Rider to holding down the podium. Molly brings an incredible mix of lightness and intensity to every RIDE – she’s genuine, supportive and approachable, all while pushing you to your limits so you can feel strong, accomplished and super sweaty.

    Where did you grow up?

    I was born and raised here in Vancouver…I don’t think I’ll ever be able to leave haha.

    Can you remember your first RIDE class? How long did it take until you realized you wanted to become an Instructor?

    Oh man, I’ll never forget it. My first class was with Noah and I was a HOT mess! I struggled for sure, but I left with this great feeling of accomplishment. It really didn’t take me long before I knew. RIDE has this really unique vibe. It’s completely different from everywhere else and I wanted in on it haha.

    How would you describe your teaching style?

    Passionate and Intense. I really try my best to connect with every Rider in the room. I want my Riders to feel like they can let go. I want them to explore their potential. I want them to push past where they have ever pushed before. I want them to feel safe taking risks. I want them to observe and take in every single feeling and emotion without resisting it. I want them to pull out that grit that lives inside all of us. I want them to feel strong.

    Best part of being an Instructor is…

    Creating a safe and positive space for our Riders.
    Being able to build a connection with every person that walks through our studio doors. There is something so rewarding about watching a new face turn into a familiar one.

    Dance! I’ve been a dancer my entire life so I love a good ballet or contemporary class. Also Julie’s All City 8 Count class is straight FIRE.

    How has becoming a RIDE Instructor changed you?

    As a dancer, I’ve always had a really strong connection between my body and mind. Teaching at RIDE has only strengthened that. RIDE has given me the opportunity to express myself in a way that I have never been able to before.

    The entire RIDE team.

    You’ll find me at the dog beach in kits with my two babies Heidi and Olive. Heidi’s a chocolate lab and Olive’s a cattle dog…not that you asked lol. I’m obsessed with them.

    Any hidden or not so hidden talents?

    I went to circus school for a year.

    If you could brunch with any person (past or present), who would it be and why?

    My family. They are the most important people in my life. I would brunch with them every day if I could.

    Best memory since you joined RIDE?

    This is a tough one because there have been so many. I think my Community RIDE was a pretty magical memory. I’ll never forget how it felt opening the door to the studio for the first time.

    #1 piece of advice for someone looking to have a killer RIDE?

    Do not be afraid of resistance.
    Get out of your own way.

    What has you stoked on life right now?

    I just recently gained a new niece and nephew so i’m really excited about that!

  • Meet Andra – a Toronto Instructor who held down the front row with intense passion before transitioning onto the podium. Andra brings heavy, goosebump-inducing beats to every class, and her natural rhythm and dance moves on and off the bike will get you stoked and cranking that tension. Get to know Andra!

    Where did you grow up?

    Toronto.

    Can you remember your first RIDE class?

    My best friend Lily took me to my first RIDE class in Vancouver in 2014. To be honest, it was all kind of a blur; the dark room, the music, the heat. All I can really remember from that first class was the “1,2 – 1,2” and how the instructor said those words. I could barely get the beat and probably looked ridiculous. To this day, I can still hear the “1,2”. Or maybe that’s just me saying “1,2.” “1-2!!!!!…” Say it. It’s addicting.

    How long did it take until you realized you wanted to become an Instructor?

    I knew it right away. Before my first RIDE Toronto class I had been riding all over the city with a fire under my butt knowing I wanted to teach one day. As soon as I did my first RIDE Toronto class, I knew RIDE was where I wanted to be. It was so unique and so different compared to everywhere else. I instantly felt a connection with the classes, fellow Riders, instructors and the entire community. I knew I wanted to be part of it. Rider -> energy exchange -> Instructor. Hi here I am!

    How would you describe your teaching style?

    I try to create a space where Riders can let go, be free in that room and remove themselves from real life for 50 minutes by encouraging them to surrender themselves to the journey of the class. I’m passionate in my classes, physically, vocally, emotionally, and I push my Riders to be passionate too, whatever that may look like for them. For the most part, I like to let the music dictate the class…oh and my dance moves.

    Best part of being an Instructor is…

    Two things.

    First: It’s so inspiring to see clients work hard, grow, push their personal limits and boundaries, move to the front row, and double-up, all while smiling, laughing, yelling, and woop-ing throughout the entire process. There is such a unique energy RIDE clients bring to the studio and witnessing that first hand is awesome.

    Second: Dani also said it, but pretending to be a DJ for 50 mins spinning heavy hot beats (literally) in that sweaty room with the most amazing people bringing unbelievable energy at ungodly hours of the morning is basically like being a famous world touring DJ…right?!

    How has becoming a RIDE Instructor changed you?

    RIDE has taught me how to take control and follow my gut. I think it’s easy for a lot of people to go with the flow of how things organically progress in their life. RIDE has proved to me that I am in the driver’s seat and it’s shown me I’m not afraid of that.

    Who motivates you?

    My dad. He’s the best.

    What’s your #1 life hack?

    When boiling water in a pot, start by adding roughly 2 inches into the pot and at the same time put on a kettle filled with water. When the kettle is fully boiled, pour the water into the pot. You will have a full pot of boiling water in 3-4 mins, as opposed to 10 mins.

    Where can we find you on a Saturday afternoon in the city?

    Bopping around the city, grabbing a fresh loaf at Brodflour, chilling in Trinity Bellwoods. If it’s rainy – binge watching mind-numbing reality TV with my roomie.

    Any hidden or not so hidden talents?

    It’s actually a not-so-hidden almost talent, but I’ve been working on my shuffle.

    If you could brunch with any person (past or present), who would it be and why?

    My girl Elena Cruz (@ecruz_n) so she could give me some shuffling tips (see question above).

    Best memory since you joined RIDE?

    It’s too hard to choose a single memory, but I always remember and love whenever I share the podium with someone new for the first time, whether it’s a co-teach or just a podium RIDE. It’s a totally different viewpoint up there – literally and figuratively – so to share that perspective with someone is special. You see another side of them as instructors, but also as people.

    #1 piece of advice for someone looking to have a killer RIDE?

    Allow yourself to be swept into the journey of the class. It’s pretty magical when you just let go.

    What has you stoked on life right now?

    SUMMER IN THE CITY.

    What does RIDE mean to you?

    RIDE means passion; a passion for sweat, music, athleticism, movement, energy, and community. RIDE has been a therapeutic force in my life that has given me a place to let go, forget about real life stresses, and be myself. Oh, and I’ve met some pretty incredible people through it all.

    Meet Jocelyn, more commonly known as Joc – a Vancouver Instructor with a heart of gold and mega passion for sweat. Joc commands the room with power and grace – always focusing on form while encouraging you to get lost in the music. Get to know Joc and how RIDE has impacted her life.

    Where did you grow up?

    Halifax, Nova Scotia! I moved to Vancouver in 2012. Thought I would stay a year…never left.

    Can you remember your first RIDE class? How long did it take until you realized you wanted to become an Instructor?

    Of course! JJ actually taught my very first RIDE in 2016. Marqelle, our Yaletown Studio Manager, then encouraged me to audition after about 6 months of riding Michael Kong’s 6AM classes religiously.

    He taught a RIDE in March of 2016 (Ciara theme, of course), and I cried on the way home because I had never in my life felt that powerful. I think that was the moment.

    How would you describe your teaching style?

    Simple and powerful. My style is very athletic and focuses on building strength and endurance. My choreography tends to be simple so you will focus harder on engaging your muscles and pushing yourself. My goal is for your class to be the hardest you physically push yourself, so you become better after every RIDE.

    Best part of being an instructor is…

    Creating a space for my Riders. For whatever it is they need…a huge physical release and a crazy workout, or to work through whatever is going on outside the room. We’ve all been there, so I consider it a privilege to be able to give my people that opportunity.

    In February I did a few classes at the Ossington RIDE, and Emily Palley-Samson (killer instructor, monster babe, I could go on) blew me away. Everything about her class…but her music was SO GOOD. We share a love for dancehall and obscure UK rappers, so I’ll throw in Boasty by Wiley, Steffllon Don, Sean Paul and Idris Elba just for her.

    How has becoming a RIDE Instructor changed you?

    In a funny way, being an Instructor and holding myself to a very high standard, has forced me to be more gentle with myself. I tend to be incredibly hard on myself. As an Instructor, you have to be a bit unflappable. Things will go wrong, and our classes can get a little crazy. I’ve learned to roll with it, accept myself, and not beat myself up.

    Go-to quote or words to live by?

    Don’t get on the train.

    For my friend Maddy (who better be printing off this article for the fridge)…she taught us a lot about dealing with stress and anxiety from her yoga training. When things come at you, you can acknowledge and sit in your feelings when you need…but let the train pass. Just don’t allow yourself to go down the path of negative self talk. Just don’t get on it.

    Who motivates you?

    My wonderful friends. I’m extremely lucky to have a very tight pack behind me. They truly hold up the mirror and force me to look in, whatever the situation.

    Favourite book?

    Dance Dance Dance by Haruki Murakami, and The Happiness Project by Gretchen Rubin.

    What’s your #1 life hack?

    Packing a candle when I travel. Cozy home vibes anywhere in the world.

    Where can we find you on a Saturday afternoon in the city?

    Coffee shop and brewery crawling, and always at the beach in the summer.

    Any hidden or not so hidden talents?

    Well…I used to be in a choir in high school. And *I THINK* i was a pretty good singer. I also am very excellent at drinking wine and assembling charcuterie boards.

    If you could brunch with any person (past or present), who would it be and why?

    My sisters. I’m the youngest of three girls, and I live across the country from them. We all live in different cities and lead very different lives…what I would give to be able to see them more.

    Best memory since you joined RIDE?

    I have a few.

    Our summer of training at UNDRGRND in Lonsdale feels like 100 years ago…but that was special.

    Every shared moment with Marlon between our 5:15PM and 6:20PM classes on Wednesdays (in Yaletown…hit us up). You know those work friends who just understand exactly what’s going on as soon as they look at you? Marlon is that one for me.

    #1 piece of advice for someone looking to have a killer RIDE?

    It’s so easy at first to get super caught up with “performing” and hitting every single beat… Don’t think about it so hard! Focus on form and tension, and just go.

    What has you stoked on life right now?

    I just turned 29 and am genuinely so stoked for this entire year! A lot of love and wonderful things to dive into.

    What does RIDE mean to you?

    RIDE changed everything for me. It showed me what I was capable of, when I didn’t always believe it before.
