  • RIDE x BACKPACK BUDDIES – THANK YOU

This past weekend in our Vancouver studios, we came together as a community to RIDE in support of Backpack Buddies.

Rooted in family, community, and empathy, Backpack Buddies is a grassroots organization with a big vision. Backpack Buddies gives hungry B.C. children one less thing to worry about. Through their program, last year they delivered 49,000 backpacks of food to children across British Columbia who would otherwise have not eaten for the weekend. One backpack supplies a child with 9 meals, fresh fruit, and snacks for a weekend.

When schools closed in March because of the COVID-19 pandemic, the weekend hunger gap became a 7-day hunger gap, with the needs of vulnerable families across B.C. increasing. More than 2,000 children received bags of food from Backpack Buddies every week from April to June, and the organization has increased its reach by more than 50%. This fall, they are determined to reach 3,000 hungry kids every week, with plans to reach 5,000 by December.

Through our RIDE’s this past weekend, we were able to fill 90 backpacks! We want to thank all of you who joined us, and our amazing instructor team (Molly, Tyler, and Sara) who donated their time.

  • RIDE OR DIE | SHIRA, INSTRUCTOR

Get to know Shira – a Toronto and RIDE EXT Instructor with a personality to match her hair – fun and energetic! You can expect to leave her class with a song stuck in your head and a smile on your face.

    Where did you grow up?
    Toronto!

Can you remember your first RIDE class?

Crystal clear, my friend took me for a trial class of this new underground place called RIDE. You would enter through a vacant store on Ossington guided by a path of candles. I had no idea what to think. I was seated bike 56 (backy back) and Ashley was the instructor (whoah). I remember thinking WTF did I get myself into? I could barely keep up, not to mention was 7 months pregnant at the time. Her intensity both in form and voice scared the crap out of me. Something about that experience though made me crave going back. Saturday mornings with Cat have been a ritual since then.

How long did it take until you realized you wanted to become an Instructor?

We all know the learning curve to perfecting that form takes a while. Learning to keep the beat, and not wanting to throw up after 15-minutes took me a while. I’d say during maternity leave RIDE became a very special place for me not only physically but mentally. It became my safe and happy place. It was then I knew I wanted to share that same feeling back with everyone else. True story, I auditioned twice and was gutted when I didn’t make the cut the first time. It took me all year to muster up the courage to audition a second time before becoming an instructor and the reward was better than I could have imagined. Never, ever give up!

    Describe your teaching style.

My style is so driven by mood. Part of why RIDE is so special is the emotional connection you get from hearing a song that taps into you. You close your eyes and really “feel it”. A mixture of high intensity (gotta love a 6-min jog) with a soulful climb is my jam!

Best part of being an Instructor is…

The community, no doubt about it. I can’t tell you how many times Dez or Winta and everyone at the studio would offer to watch Levi (my son) so I could get a workout in, or even an instructor helping me on the way auditioning the second time, the clients become your coffee dates or therapists on a Saturday morning. Some of my closest friends have come from RIDE and eternally grateful for this family.

    Track you’ve had on repeat?

Rufus du Sol live from Joshua Tree

Favourite way to sweat outside of RIDE?

Usually Barry’s, F45, Barre, or even running!

How has becoming a RIDE Instructor changed you?

Learning to be vulnerable and be ok with it. So much of being an instructor is laid out on that podium for everyone to see. The real magic happens when you just let go. No judgment of yourself or others and let that true authentic you glow.

    Who motivates you?

This may sound cheesy but myself. I am the worst critic, so I am always constantly challenging myself to be better, stronger, and held accountable for my actions. Having kids changes you one way or another and Levi constantly motivates me to be the best mother I can be for him. He is the reason I get up every morning (even if it’s before 7:00AM).

Where can we find you on a Saturday afternoon in the city?

Saturday morning rituals always begin with Cat 9:35 while front staff entertains Levi (god bless them all). Then a coffee date with friends and clients. I usually head to the market for fresh bagels and grab our favourite things like mustard sticks and spicy olives. It’s kind of mine and Levi’s thing.

Best memory since you joined RIDE?

I will never forget Dez’s birthday ride taught by Jess. The playlist was fire, everyone had glowsticks and the room was filled with all our friends screaming. Hands down most fun ride, pretty sure Alex broke her nose on the handlebars from pulsing too hard.

#1 piece of advice for someone looking to have a killer RIDE?

It can be and IS overwhelming your first time. Whether you come alone or with a friend trust the process and give yourself a few times before you decide if it’s for you. Just remember to close your eyes, embrace the darkness, and have fun. Despite what you’re thinking, no one is watching you.

What has you stoked on life right now?

I am expecting baby #2 (another boy)! So, I know that will have it’s new challenges and moments. I’m really excited to grow my family and looking forward to experiencing what the future holds.

  • RIDE COVID-19 PLAYBOOK

    RIDE COVID-19 PLAYBOOK

The RIDE COVID-19 PLAYBOOK was designed to inform and explain the steps that RIDE CYCLE CLUB takes to ensure the continued health and safety of our community.

This playbook will evolve and may be subject to change as we learn more about the virus, and work with provincial health officials.

    1. BEFORE ENTERING A RIDE STUDIO
Before every client and staff member is to enter a RIDE studio, the following actions must take place:

    1. Temperature checks must be performed. Anyone with elevated temperature (above 37.6°C) will not be permitted into the studio.

    2. The following statements must be read and verbally acknowledged:

    • I do not have any symptoms of COVID-19, including, but not limited to fever,
cough, sore throat, shortness of breath, runny nose, loss of taste or smell, nausea, and vomiting, headache, muscle aches, fatigue, loss of appetite or diarrhea.
    • I have not been in close contact with someone who has tested positive for COVID-19.
    • I have not travelled outside of the country within the last 14 days.
    • I understand that by choosing to attend a class at RIDE CYCLE CLUB, even
with the increased health and safety protocols, I acknowledge and accept the additional risks associated with the global health pandemic of COVID-19.

We ask that all community members and staff answer these questions honestly and to the best of their knowledge.

If the answer is ‘NO’ to the statements or someone presents an elevated temperature (above 37.6°C), we will not allow you to enter our studios. We will recommend you contact provincial health services and follow their direction.

    3. Masks must be worn by anyone entering a RIDE studio. Masks are to only be removed once on the bike and once class is to start. As soon as class is over, masks must be put on before exiting the room

    2. LATE CANCELLATIONS DUE TO COVID-19 SYMPTOMS
RIDE will grant late cancellations exceptions for requests to do with COVID-19 symptoms. We will request that you please contact provincial health services (VCH, AHS, OHS) and follow the recommended guidelines before returning to our studios.

    3. COVID-19 EXPOSURE IN STUDIO

    3.1 RIDE Staff
Any staff member that is showing / feeling symptoms of COVID-19 must not come into the studio and must contact their manager ASAP and let them know the date when symptoms started. Management will contact provincial health services (VCH, AHS, OHS) immediately and act on their guidance.

In cases deemed low risk by provincial health services (VCH, AHS, OHS), we will notify all staff and guests who may have had exposure, credit their account for the class, and forward along provincial health services protocols.

In cases deemed moderate to high risk by provincial health services (VCH, AHS, OHS), we will repeat the above action and follow any additional steps deemed necessary by provincial health services (VCH, AHS, OHS). These may include a studio closure, additional deep cleaning and/or broader message to our community.

3.2 If a RIDE staff member has tested positive for COVID-19
they must not come into the studio and must inform their manager ASAP. Management will contact provincial health services (VCH, AHS, OHS) immediately. All staff for that studio will be contacted and requested to follow the guidelines from provincial health services (VCH, AHS, OHS).

The studio will be temporarily closed, deep cleaned, and a broader message to our community will be sent out.

    3.3 RIDE Community Member
Should RIDE be informed that a community member has contracted COVID-19 who has been in one of our studios. RIDE Studio Management will contact provincial health services (VCH, AHS, OHS) immediately and act on their guidance.

In cases deemed low risk by provincial health services (VCH, AHS, OHS), we will notify all staff and guests who may have had exposure to the staff member and credit their account for the class.

    5. CLASS CANCELATIONS OR TEMPORARY STUDIO CLOSURE DUE TO COVID-19
Due to the nature of COVID-19, RIDE CYCLE CLUB may cancel a class or temporarily close a studio at any time. RIDE will notify anyone booked into a current or future class and inform them if the class is cancelled / temporary studio closure. This may include a broader message to our community.

    Thank you.

  • RIDE OR DIE | Ash Rose, Instructor

Get to know Ash Rose – a Vancouver Instructor known for inspiring and motivating the room with real-talk. You can always count on Ash Rose to ensure every rider feels comfortable, empowered, and has a big smile on their face.

    Where did you grow up?

I grew up between Bowen and Richmond (random I know) I spent the majority of any free time with my Grandparents. All my best memories are from Bowen (on the water sailing, swimming, and living the island life).

Can you remember your first RIDE class?

I do! Wow, I was TERRIFIED. I was put in the front row and luckily for me, Marlon was the Instructor. He took the time to make me feel safe and to guide me through. Towards the end of class was able to catch the leading leg. Safe to say I was hooked!

How long did it take until you realized you wanted to become an Instructor?

Within a couple of months of riding and seeing the positive impact that RIDE made on my life, I knew I wanted to bring that positivity and energy to others. As soon as RIDE announced they were opening a studio in North Vancouver I knew that was my opportunity. I started by working at the front desk and riding as much as I could, I truly learned SO much from all the talented instructors we have. I built confidence and set the goal to join the team. Here we are almost 2 years in and I am forever grateful for the community we get to be a part of daily.

How would you describe your teaching style?

    UPBEAT and MOTIVATING

I call it like it is! No bullshit and no judgment in my class. If I know holding that isolation is going to be hard, I will let you know and guide you on the best way to push through. I try to make it clear that its OK to not be OK. This is a safe space. Lean in and let go.

Best part of being an Instructor is…

The community – hands down. Lonsdale holds a HUGE place in my heart ❤️ It’s where I started and grew into the instructor I am today. I have just recently joined the Hamilton studio, and already I am blown away by the community there and look forward to meeting new riders!

    Track you’ve had on repeat.

I’m obsessed with ‘Difficult to love’ by Elderbrook (the Amtrak Remix)

Or ‘Body Shock’ by Shakecraft (extended mix) – this will fire a room right up!

    AM or PM RIDES?

I love a good AM RIDE – it really is the best way to start any day! Don’t get me wrong, PM RIDE’s are fun, but if you know me, I am in bed by 8pm (#goals).

Favourite way to sweat outside of RIDE?

I just started running, which took me a while to fall in love with, but truly a great way to sweat. I recently started training with Gabby Villasenor (Fuelled by Feeling) and I’ve been LOVING it. Each session is a fully mind+body workout. She’s absolute magic.

How has becoming a RIDE Instructor changed you?

My mental state and overall physical state has changed drastically; it’s given me greater confidence in myself and has boosted my overall mood day-to-day. Before this journey I was in a very dark space, RIDE pulled me out of it and brought me to where I am today. I can say with full confidence – RIDE saved me.

Go-to quote or words to live by?

Scared? Good, we will not grow by staying inside that comfort zone.

    Who motivates you?

This is a tough question…I would say the RIDE community and hands down my family and friends.

    Favourite book?

I’m obsessed with the Lord of The Rings trilogy. I’ve read each book at least once every two years since I was 17. I can quote the movies and I’m just going to say this…. Sam is the hero of that story.

    What’s your #1 life hack?

Fall in love with a chef!

Where can we find you on a Saturday afternoon in the city?

If it’s a sunny day, you will find me in Lolo enjoying a patio happy hour, but if it’s raining I’m 100% curled up with Netflix.

Any hidden or not so hidden talents?

I’m really good at Ping Pong and Badminton.

If you could brunch with any person (past or present), who would it be and why?

Jason Mamoa – if you know, you know. Can you imagine mimosas with Mamoa? Say that 3x fast.

But in all seriousness, I would LOVE to have brunch with my Nan one more time. She was always the life of any get-together and could bring a smile to my face to matter what.

Best memory since you joined RIDE?

Seawheeze 2019 – the energy the RIDE team carried and seeing all the runners follow their dreams and crush their goals was unforgettable.

#1 piece of advice for someone looking to have a killer RIDE?

Don’t hold any expectations or compare yourself to others in the class. Don’t compete but vibe off the rider next to you. Everyone is at a different place and every RIDE will feel different. Show up, do the work and be the best you can each class.

What has you stoked on life right now?

FOOD! My boyfriend is an INCREDIBLE chef. If anyone knows me, you know I am not the best with cooking. He has introduced me to so many amazing different styles of food and dishes. The deal is I have to cook twice a week to get my cooking skills going and I love it!

  • RIDE CYCLE CLUB TEMPORARY CLOSURES

    Dear RIDE CYCLE CLUB Community,

In addition to temporarily closing our Toronto studios, we have also made the difficult decision to temporarily close our Vancouver studios to do our part in keeping our community healthy.

Starting Tuesday, March 17th, 2020 all RIDE CYCLE CLUB studios will be temporarily closed until further notice.

We have been diligently adhering to the advice of federal and provincial health agencies and have tried to stay open as long as possible to offer our community and staff a safe environment to build mental and physical strength. However, with much consideration, we have concluded that temporarily closing our studios is the best course of action at this time.

If you are booked in for an upcoming class, your credit will be returned to your account. All memberships will be frozen for the duration of the closure, and RIDE package expiration dates will be extended.

As always, we will continue to keep you, our community up-to-date on Instagram + blog as things progress. We will miss you and look forward to seeing you in the studio soon.

For any questions, please don’t hesitate to reach out to your RIDE studio.

    Sincerely,

    RIDE CYCLE CLUB

  • GRL PWR

    [de·clare]

To make known formally or officially; proclaim.

“I DECLARE that I will quiet any self-doubt and move forward with confidence.”

    – Ashley A.

To all of you, my favourite people.

Someone once told me that there are three things in life that hold us back. FEAR – of not knowing the outcome, SHAME – the thought of looking dumb, and IGNORANCE – the lack of knowledge.

Every person at some point in their life has allowed one of these three things to hold them back from exploring extraordinary possibilities.

Years ago, RIDE CYCLE CLUB was an extraordinary possibility that I wished one day to become a reality. As the work started, one song at a time, one RIDE at a time, one studio at a time, I had to push out of my comfort zone and internally keep repeating those 3 words FEAR, SHAME, and IGNORANCE to remind myself I was capable of creating the space I wanted.

One where anyone could walk through the doors and be completely themselves, where there was a community that helped build one another up through movement and music, and space where people gathered to find 50 min of emotional and physical freedom.

When we all get to witness the personal growth of our community members, whether it’s in their everyday lives or on the bike, we celebrate. It might be signing up for your first class, hitting all the right moves, or pushing yourself to complete a run; the truth is that your individual growth is celebrated because it affects all of us in that room.

So, allow yourself to be vulnerable with what you DECLARE. I truly believe that if you set out to create something you believe in; it can be done.

GRL PWR is real. Thank you for celebrating International Women’s Day with us.

    Yours Truly,

    –A.A.

  • THE COMMUNITY | Christina Lumba, Vancouver

Meet Christina – a Vancouver RIDE or DIE who over the past year has become an integral part 0f our RIDE Hamilton community. She shows up in a big way and brings the spirit and drive that defines our RIDE tribe. We love you Christina!

What do you do for your 9-5?
I am the lead RMT and the community manager at Myodetox, a manual + movement therapy company. We have physiotherapists, registered massage therapists, and chiropractors. I work both positions full-time, treating our clients about 5 days a week, and when I’m not treating I am connecting and building relationships with other brands that align with ours.

If your bestie were to describe you in three words, what would they be?
    Loyal, ambitious, energetic.

How long have you been coming to RIDE?
    1 year

What motivates you to get your ass to class?
The urge to escape a high stress environment for just a small moment, then rebalances me back into the environment.

How has RIDE impacted your life?
RIDE has provided me a space to let go of any negative energy & release the mental + physical tension of stress during the class. With instructors that care about technicality, form, and the betterment of each client, I feel they push you to overcome the challenges that are faced in the room.

Outside of your 9-5 – tell us about all the badass things you’re up to
Reading, studying, & reviewing anatomy physiology, I am a nerd. Researching all the dream travelling destinations I want to go to when I retire in a 100 years.

In your opinion, what makes RIDE’s community so unique?
The push to RIDE as one pack. It reminds me of myodetox, no one gets left behind.

    Favourite instructor and why?
Michael Kong because he focuses on form, technique & challenges your limits. Matt Sicoly, because of hiphop, but I can never get in his classes.

    Best RIDE memory?
James’ USHER vs. Destiny’s Child RIDE. Rode it with a BFF Michael Kong, we sang, danced, held hands, and were in-sync the whole time.

What other workouts do you do outside of RIDE?
Running outside, weight lifting at the gym, boxing at All City Athletics.

    Song you’ve got on repeat?
    Xxplosive – Dr.Dre

If you could brunch with any male/lady boss (past or present), who would it be?
    Serena Williams

If you were to give a s/o to a local entrepreneur, who would it be?
    Nick Lo

Describe your ideal Saturday in the city.
Slight sleep in. Morning run. Brunch at whitespot with husband. Shopping. RIDE. Shower. Dinner. Wine. Movie. Sleep

    Who motivates you?
Love of my life, Anthony Cho

Fave quote or words to live by?
“Don’t be a scared kid. Just do it” – Dad

    Last book you read was….
    Looptail by Bruce Poon Tip

What does RIDE mean to you?
RIDE means to leave your shit at the door and be in the moment.

  • THE COMMUNITY | Martin Lee, Toronto

    ride cycle club
Meet Martin – an undeniable force and presence at RIDE in Toronto. Since taking his first class in the summer, he’s been a staple and an immediate addition to our family. From bringing the entire team coffee (on multiple occasions), to helping the staff fold towels before & after class, to making it his personal mission to RIDE every single Instructor’s class in 2019 (even if he has to do three classes in one day to do it), his passion for and commitment to RIDE is inspirational. He’s kind, thoughtful, witty, supportive, inclusive, unapologetic, and arguably RIDE’s number one fan. We truly can’t remember or imagine RIDE Toronto without him!

If your bestie were to describe you in three words, what would they be?

Eccentric – Eccentricity is a core attribute of my existence that seems to predispose me to new challenges, serendipitous experiences, and sometimes crippling predicaments, which I love.

Bold – This pattern of chaos for perpetual action comes from an innate fuel of boldness, which is consistent with being an Aries. With Aries, they are fearless, forever spontaneous, and impossible to predict, but when you gain our loyalty, one thing is certain: we stay. Also, we’ll have your back until the end.

Childish –Childish because “10.5″ isn’t just my shoe size, it is also my mental age.

What motivates you to get your ass to class?

RIDE connects. RIDE can strike a perfect balance between timeless tranquility and unfounded anticipation. You gaze up into the stars, intimidated by its brilliance.. (i.e. Andra can get extra-celestial and show you)

RIDE soothes. RIDE can calm you into a silky-smooth mood so groovy you can pull off an impossible bank heist like Ocean’s Eleven, but all by yourself. Okay which bank are we robbing now? (i.e. Dani boogies down with it beside the bike)

RIDE motivates. RIDE pushes one into activities that causes them discomfort as a springboard to higher psychological peaks. In hindsight, the sky is not the limit and neither is the space, as limits are actually an illusion (i.e. Reilly shows you it’s possible)

RIDE reminisces. RIDE does not care about the latest hype. Some songs stay with us a little longer, speak for us when we can’t, and hold the keys to our hearts (i.e. Taylor isn’t afraid to go there.)

RIDE pushes. RIDE wants to set you on fire, blow up your demons, and shatter all your unresolved insecurities. Trust her. She will shut you up, especially the inner voice that tells you “you can’t.” (i.e. Alex can, and clearly wants to, very unapologetically and THAT’s why we fucking love her)

RIDE parties. RIDE has all your besties in the world in a room full of iced-cold Coronas, fireside conversations, and the hottest dance floor. (i.e. Emily – her parties are the best kind, like ever…and why? Because I feel extremely sad when it is over)

RIDE defibrillates. RIDE can rejuvenate your skin to be softer than a newborn’s buttocks. It might even bring ELVIS back to life from the graves if JG isn’t careful (i.e. Jess: “put 8 turns on, SIT DOWN, and RIDE!”)

RIDE dances. RIDE can paint you a breathless glimpse of the galaxy with nothing but naked movements and primal passion. (i.e. Calida can move the Himalayas with her shoulders)

In addition, what motivates me are instructors at RIDE I don’t get to RIDE with as frequently due to my schedule. I’m dying to experience and pick up new skills from Elizabeth, Cat, Jacob, Rebecca, Winter, Tracy, Lauryn, Chelsea, Danny, Shira, Dylan, Taylin and Patrick.

How has RIDE impacted your life?

With RIDE, it is the opposite of loneliness. There is no word in English that quite adequately captures that feeling.

RIDE gives me a chance to save myself from being myself, which is running 10kms around the city in the dark and racing streetcars along Spadina (trust me, I’m faster).

If you could brunch with any male/lady boss (past or present), who would it be?

    Homer Simpson.

Right before Marge is pregnant with Maggie, he works at the bowling alley, the job of his dreams. He makes just enough to support Marge, Bart, and Lisa. As soon as he finds out about Maggie, Homer has to beg to go back to the job he hates with Mr. Burns at the nuclear power plant. It is life’s twist and turns as depicted by the Simpsons that makes me love the show and make me want to meet him. Homer is living the dream.

    Favourite Instructor and why?

If you ask me in person, I’ll take you out to coffee and explain.

    Best RIDE memory?

It has to be my first RIDE.

The 63 bus never comes on time. I arrive 5 mins late and the door is shut, meaning I cannot go in.

There I stand in disappointment when out of nowhere this woman rushes me in, snaps the Giro in the dark, and leaves forever.

For weeks, I want to say thank you but I didn’t even know who she is. Turns out, she is none other than Alex Bergquist!

If it isn’t for this Angel, I probably would have left and never started! Forever grateful, I owe her my life for real.

And then for my first RIDE, there is Andra. That Woman. Some say, it is actually impossible for her to stop pedalling unless the music stops. And that Lebron is legally not allowed to ask her out again for a 1 on 1 rematch after she dunked all over him in a charity game for at risk youth.

What other workouts do you do outside of RIDE?

I recently discovered Meg for Yoga at Yoga Tree.

Hot Yoga with her is absolutely amazing – MEG! What does her name say if you spell it backwards? Because that’s what she is…

Mind you, I didn’t always practice Yoga. This Gem managed to change that. Thanks Meg!

    Song you’ve got on repeat?

Earth Wind and Fire – September.

If you were to give a s/o to a local entrepreneur, who would it be?

Check out @wearelandfed – my friend Leo started this. I like the message it sends, and what it stands for.

I would also like to give a shout out to the support staff stars at RIDE as well:

Lori, Megan. Jess B, Richelle, Emily[bbgrlemmy], Laura, Lily, Lindsey Banks , Winta, Daria, Vanessa, Taryn, Gena, Rachel , Raveena, Chloe, Ashley [aka Boss Lady, the OG], Dezmond [Do Drop Boxing with Dez!], Claire, Robin, Stephanie, Janet, Jaclyn, Kyle , Kate, Christie, Morgan, and The tall Dude with the dreamy eyes at the counter, so dreamy…

Emotion contagion is real and the tone you guys set speaks for itself.

Describe your ideal Saturday in the city.

I work 7 days a week. If I do get Saturdays off, or any days off, I sign up with instructors I can never RIDE with.

Afterwards, topping it off with a can of Sapsucker!

    Who motivates you?

INSTRUCTORS – At RIDE, the instructors do! Not only are they putting us through a regimen, but they are also OWNING it while keeping rhythm, DJ-ing, troubleshooting if music stops, distributing weights, controlling brightness, leading 56 other people, practicing comedy routines, handling a lighter (without starting a fire), making sure we breathe, cheering, solving the DaVinci Code, and the list goes on…

SUPPORT – Their enthusiasm, attention to detail, and energy is vital. Mind you, they are brilliant Riders. As such, I like asking them for advice. I also make a point of noticing which bike they’re on in case I get lost, or switching bikes just to RIDE beside them, like I do with Emily (@bbgrlemmy) or Lindsey (the Queen who signed me up on my first day, isn’t she amazing?).

RIDERS –  I look at others for motivation. A strong group of riders means that I give up less easily during long, crazy runs – so yeah, you don’t really know who you’re inspiring. As such, you have to be mindful of the energy you bring into the room!

ALEX – Just look at A+: The woman rides with utter, raw power. Makes me wonder if she swallowed the sun. That Woman. Some say, she can stare Mike Tyson into submission. And that, to this day, Prince Harry STILL loses sleep over her.

MEL – This is similar with Mel, but she swallows pizza pops instead 😉! She likes to hide on Bike 3 and Bike 55. Now we know where to find her. I also love her dog Millie – Millie is so funny and cute.

SHRUTI – Her energy is palpable. Essentially, you can turn off the lights for the entire RIDE and I’ll still be able to tell if she’s here or not. I can. Also, can we engrave Bike 16 with her name already?

TAYLOR – Taylor  was the one who helped me with my bike set up on my second ride after class. She actually stayed behind to help me. She is awesome 🙂 You don’t forget things like this.

TAYLIN – She is the kind of person who would actually do quads (as in four RIDES in a row), and still look exactly the same for each of the RIDES. Hell, I can barely survive one.

KYLE – Watch his arms. They’re steady during RIDES and moves very slowly, which means his core is as tight as his biceps. Kyle, do you have a license for those big guns? 😋

KENNEDY – You can ask Ken how she plays chess against Death to keep sick kids alive [at Sunnybrook Hospital], sometimes overnight, and still manages to nuke all her rides by daylight with Dave. You’re as hardcore as they come Ken!

SARAH – If you think riding for yourself is hard, and you need motivation, why not try riding for “two,” like Sarah! I was riding next to her the day her babe was born. She is inspirational!

EMILY – I have to say, Emily is the only one that makes me feel like misty eyes nostalgia, home sweet home, a feat that is not easy to achieve, especially for a guy who is constantly drifting, day dreamin’, and, at times, existentially lost. For 50 minutes a week on a Thursday night, I genuinely feel a soldier coming home from a 10-year war to reunite with my family! I die a little when Emily tells me I have to leave and head off to war again (and wait until next Thursday).

REILLY – And then there is Reilly. That woman. Some say, her tears are alcoholic. And if she smiles, sunflowers will open in December, just for her.

Fave quote or words to live by?

“Who are you when nobody is watching?”

    Last book you read was….

    Does Peppa Pig count?

What does RIDE mean to you?

RIDE means a lot to me.

By now, I don’t remember my week as Mondays, Tuesdays, and etc. When colleagues ask me, what day is it today [Wednesday], I tell them it is JESS-day. You get what I mean.

In all seriousness, RIDE isn’t just about riding a stationary bike in a darkroom. It isn’t about that $80 bottle of Aesop for your post-RIDE ablutions either. Instead, it is an incubator of constant resurrections.

In the face of self-defeating conundrums, it is a spawn for one to be reborn to derive hope, and to dare the impossible. On a lighter note, it can also be a stop you take before secretly eating bang bang ice-cream.

*Special thanks to Trilby who worked with me on this blog. She is the one who manages what you see on the official RIDE IG account. And Alex (aka “A+”) for taking me into RIDE and keeping me out of trouble*
